Visiting Grandma
Donna, TX, USA
February 2002
When my baby was two weeks old, I went into the bedroom to take a nap while she was sleeping (about 2PM). I was just about to fall asleep when I noticed a familiar smell...the smell of "White Shoulders" perfume. When I opened my eyes, I saw my grandmother who had died five years prior. She was leaning over the bassinet looking at my baby. Even though I was quite shocked, I was not afraid. I spoke to her, asking why she was there and her words were, "I wanted to see my great-grand daughter." I asked her if she wanted to hold her and she told me that she couldn't. When I asked why, her response was that she had no feeling, and was unable to hold her. I found that statement odd, but I had never really given it much thought before. She told me the baby was beautiful and then we spoke for a while about things in the past and about my grandfather who had gone on before her. Her voice sounded the same, she looked the same (except healthier) and most of all she smelled the same.
About ten minutes later, she said she had to go. I was sitting on the side of the bed when she said good bye and disappeared. The smell of her perfume lingered in that room for hours. I will never, ever forget that day. Some people say I was dreaming but believe me...I was wide awake!
